We thank you for your interest in the Whispering Oaks puppy mill dogs. We suggest first that you check out the links listed regarding the special needs that frequently accompany dogs that are born and raised in a puppy mill and then make your final decision regarding an adoption. See our press release here.
UPDATE - We are currently ready to make these very special dogs available for adoption - see our Canine Adoptions webpage. They will be coming out in groups of 2-4 as the next few days progress. Spreading out the surgeries is allowing us to spend the extra time necessary to give them all thorough dental cleanings. All Daschunds will have a $125 adoption fee.
In addition to any specific information placed in individual records, they will all have the following waiver in their records:
"Brucellosis is a venereal disease in dogs. It is not usually a concern with owned pets because most pet dogs are not used for breeding. However, this dog is from a puppy mill and was used for breeding prior to coming to the APL. Given this history there is a potential for exposure to Brucellosis. This disease can be transmitted to humans, although this is rare.
We performed an in-house Rapid Slide Agglutination Test for Brucella on this dog and all of the other dogs that came from the same environment on September 9, 2008. All of these dogs tested negative. It is highly recommended by our veterinarian and by experts in the field of reproduction and bacteriology that this animal be retested by the adopter's veterinarian on October 9, 2008, and November 9, 2008, to confirm the negative result. Until these two additional confirmatory tests are done, please handle urine and all bodily fluids carefully and as if potentially contagious. It is imperative that you go to your veterinarian as soon as possible and discuss this situation with them."
In general, it is important to remember that this is a special needs pet, pulled from a puppy mill situation where it had a history of poor living conditions, lack of socialization, and lack of training. This may result in future medical concerns that are not manifesting themselves currently or that were not identified during the health and behavior evaluation performed at the Cleveland APL. The adopter assumes all responsibility and expenses for future medical and behavior concerns."
We will not be placing 'holds' or creating 'waiting lists' for this special circumstances adoption opportunity. Adoptions will take place during our regular business hours. Check this page for updates/status changes and our Canine Adoptions page to confirm/monitor the availability of these special dogs.
