Pre-Adoption Veterinary Treatments

All cats and dogs adopted from the Cleveland APL are altered (spayed or neutered), examined by a veterinarian and have received preliminary vaccinations. All cats and dogs adopted from the Cleveland Animal Protective League are given the following treatments:

DOGS

DA2PP- A combination vaccine used as an aid in the prevention of canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2, canine parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus.
FVRCP- A combination vaccine used as an aid in the prevention of disease caused by feline rhinotracheitis, callci and panleukopenia viruses.
Rabies vaccination if 3 months or older
Rabies vaccination if 3 months or older
Frontline flea treatment. It is designed to kill adult fleas and eggs, thus ending the reproductive cycle of fleas.

Pyrantel pamoate dewormer to treat roundworms (other intestinal parasites may exist and will need to be treated by your vet).

protect against kennel cough.
FeLV/FIV test for all felines.

Take Advantage of A Free Follow-Up Veterinary Exam!

A list of participating local veterinarians will be provided to you who offer one free health exam to an APL animal if the appointment is made within two weeks of your new friend's adoption.

This offer includes the initial office visit/health exam-only. The cost of follow up exams, rabies or other vaccines, diagnostic testing, treatment for illness or injury, or elective procedures will be the responsibility of the animal guardian.

Some Additional Costs You May Encounter . . .

Dog Adopters - Your dog license must be purchased. If you are a resident of Cuyahoga County, you are required to purchase a dog license annually. We will license your canine companion before you leave and add that fee to the cost of your final adoption total.

Dog Adopters - Elective Costs:

  • Microchip - Canine Adopters can purchase a microchip for their new dog, which also includes registration with the national database, for $20.

Cat Adopters - Elective Costs:

  • Microchip - Cat/Kitten Adopters can purchase a microchip for their new cat, which also includes registration with the national database, for $20.

After Your Adoption

Proper veterinary care is essential to maintaining a healthy and happy pet. Please schedule an appointment with a veterinarian within two weeks of adoption. Follow through with regular vet check-ups and updated vaccinations.

Provide training for your pet. The majority of animals euthanized each year have developed behavior problems, with the sad truth being that most behavior issues can be prevented. Find a trustworthy dog trainer who utilizes positive reinforcement techniques in animal training and schedule your training session.
